History
John Bandimere Sr. bought land along the Dakota Hogback west of Denver in 1957 and opened the strip, nicknamed Thunder Mountain, the next year. It gained a national profile when the NHRA Mile-High Nationals began in 1978, and its altitude above 5,000 feet made it uniquely challenging. The family ended racing there after 2023 and sold the property, then in 2025 bought about 114 acres near Hudson in Weld County for a planned replacement complex.
