History

Carl Fisher, James Allison, Arthur Newby and Frank Wheeler opened the speedway in 1909, and the first Indianapolis 500 ran in 1911. Its original brick surface gave it the nickname 'The Brickyard'; today only a one-yard strip of brick remains at the start-finish line. The Hulman family owned it from 1945 until Penske Entertainment bought it in 2020, and with more than 250,000 permanent seats it is the largest-capacity sports venue in the world.
