History

Lakewood Speedway opened on July 4, 1917, at the Lakewood fairgrounds south of downtown Atlanta and was nicknamed the 'Indianapolis of the South.' Over six decades it hosted AAA and USAC Champ Cars, IMCA, and NASCAR, along with midgets, motorcycles and even boat races on the infield lake. The opening of Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1960 drew away its major races, and Lakewood closed in 1979. An amphitheater was later built where turns three and four once stood.
