History

The track opened in August 1950 as a dirt oval north of Weaverville and was paved in 1957. From 1951 to 1969 it hosted NASCAR's top series, with winners including Richard and Lee Petty. Barriers were later placed on the track to stop racing, and North Buncombe High School was built on the property. Some local sources date its final shutdown to 1987.
