History
The city-owned stadium opened in 1938 and began hosting midget races on dirt the next year; the flat quarter-mile was paved in 1947 and NASCAR stock car racing started there in 1949. The Hawkins family promoted the racing for about 75 years until NASCAR took over operations in 2024. The Cup Series returned in February 2025 for the Clash, its first visit in more than five decades, and the stadium also serves as Winston-Salem State's football home.
