History

Occoneechee Speedway opened in 1947 and was one of the original tracks on NASCAR's 1949 Strictly Stock schedule. It was renamed Orange Speedway in 1954 and drew stars such as Richard Petty, Junior Johnson and Fireball Roberts until its final race in September 1968, which Petty won. The overgrown oval was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, preserved with walking trails, and added to Eno River State Park in 2022.
