History
Local businessman Harold Brasington built Darlington in 1950, hoping to create a southern answer to the Indianapolis 500. Its egg-shaped layout comes from keeping a neighbor's minnow pond intact, and the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend has been a crown-jewel event since the first year. International Speedway Corporation owned it from 1982 until merging into NASCAR in 2019.
